Therapy Services in Yorba Linda, CA

Anxiety that won’t quit. A marriage under strain. A child struggling in school. A loss you haven’t been able to grieve. Whatever brought you here — we have a specialist for it.

New Paths Family Counseling has served Yorba Linda and the surrounding Orange County communities since 2009. We are a boutique group practice — not a referral marketplace. Every counselor on our team was individually selected for their expertise, their character, and their genuine care for the people they work with. We specialize in anxiety and depression, marriage counseling, EMDR & trauma therapy, children’s therapy, and family counseling — all available in person in Yorba Linda or via secure telehealth throughout California.

Who We Help

Therapy matched to your situation

For Adults

Adult Therapy & Counseling

Adults come to us carrying things they’ve often carried alone for a long time — anxiety that won’t quiet, depression that’s drained the color from everything, or grief they’ve never had space to process. Our adult therapists don’t rush you toward a diagnosis. They help you understand what’s actually happening and make real, lasting change.

For Couples

Marriage & Couples Therapy

Research shows the average couple waits six years after problems begin before seeking help. By then, hurt compounds and patterns entrench. We work with couples at every stage — from the first cracks to the edge of separation — and we meet you where you are, not where you think you should be.

For Children & Teens

Children & Teen Therapy

Children don’t come in saying “I have anxiety.” They act out, shut down, refuse school, or cling. Teenagers pull away or explode. Our specialists are trained to meet kids where they are — and to help parents understand what’s happening beneath the surface.

For Families

Family Counseling

Family therapy isn’t about pointing blame. It’s about giving everyone in the room a chance to be heard — and helping the family develop patterns that actually work. Whether you’re navigating a crisis or a slow erosion of connection, we help families find their way back to each other.

Specialty Areas

Conditions & concerns we specialize in

Our counselors don’t treat every problem. Each has deep expertise in specific areas — which means you get a specialist, not a generalist.

Anxiety

Anxiety & Chronic Worry

Racing thoughts, physical tension, avoidance, and the exhaustion of a mind that won’t stop. Anxiety is the most common reason people seek therapy — and one of the most treatable.

Depression

Depression & Low Motivation

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if therapy is right for me?
You don’t need a diagnosis or a crisis to benefit from therapy. If something is affecting your quality of life — relationships, work, mood, sleep, how you feel about yourself — that’s enough reason to talk to someone. Most people who reach out aren’t sure what they need. That’s completely normal. A free 15-minute phone consultation can help clarify whether therapy is the right step for you right now.
Do you accept insurance?
We are an out-of-network practice, which means we don’t bill insurance directly. However, we provide a superbill (an itemized receipt) after each session that you can submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. Clients with PPO plans often recover 40–70% of session costs. Before your first session, we recommend calling the member services number on your insurance card to ask about out-of-network mental health benefits and your deductible.
Do you offer online therapy in California?
Yes. All four of our therapists offer secure telehealth sessions for clients throughout California. Sessions take place via a HIPAA-compliant video platform — no app downloads required, just a link. Research consistently shows that online therapy is equally effective as in-person therapy for most mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, couples work, and grief.
How long does therapy take?
It depends on what you’re working on and what you want from therapy. Some focused concerns show significant improvement in 8–12 sessions. Deeper trauma, long-standing relationship patterns, or complex grief may take longer. Unlike practices limited by insurance, at New Paths you and your therapist decide together when treatment is complete — not your insurance company. Your progress sets the pace, not an arbitrary session cap.
What is EMDR therapy and who is it for?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured, evidence-based therapy originally developed for PTSD and trauma. It uses bilateral stimulation — typically guided eye movements — to help the brain reprocess distressing memories that feel “stuck.” It’s effective for trauma, PTSD, anxiety, phobias, grief, and more. Jennifer Stopher, our LCSW, is trained in EMDR and has extensive experience using it with both adults and teenagers. Learn more about EMDR at New Paths.
How do I choose the right therapist for me?
The single strongest predictor of therapy outcomes is the relationship between you and your therapist — more than any technique or approach. We encourage you to read each therapist’s profile and reach out to the one who feels like the right fit. If you’re not sure, call our main line and we’ll help you match based on what you’re going through, your goals, and your schedule. There’s no pressure, no obligation, and no wrong answer.
Do you offer therapy for children? What ages do you work with?
Yes. Lillian Lai specializes in children ages 4–12 and uses play therapy and child-centered approaches that meet kids where they are developmentally. Timothy Kang works with teenagers ages 13–19 and young adults. We do not currently serve children under age 4.
What areas do you serve near Yorba Linda?
Our Yorba Linda office is conveniently located for clients from Brea, Placentia, Anaheim Hills, Fullerton, Orange, Diamond Bar, Chino Hills, and surrounding communities. Via telehealth, we serve clients anywhere in California. View our location and directions.
What happens in the first therapy session?
The first session is primarily a conversation. Your therapist will ask about what brought you in, your history, your goals, and what you’re hoping therapy will do for you. There’s no pressure to share more than you’re ready for. By the end, you and your therapist will have a shared sense of what to work on and how to approach it. Most people leave the first session feeling heard — often for the first time in a long time.
